How to Master Year 6 Fractions, Decimals, and Percentages for Exam Day

Fractions, decimals and percentages are closely connected. Students who understand the relationship between them can solve many problems more efficiently.

Start with equivalence.

For example:

1/2 = 0.5 = 50%

Understanding these relationships is more useful than memorising isolated conversion rules.

Students should become confident with:

  • Converting fractions to decimals

  • Converting decimals to percentages

  • Comparing values

  • Finding fractions of quantities

  • Calculating percentages

  • Solving word problems

Word problems deserve particular attention. The challenge is often not the calculation but deciding which mathematical operation is required.

Use estimation to check whether an answer is reasonable.

If a student calculates that 50% of 80 is 160, the answer should immediately look suspicious.

Visual models can also help. Fraction bars, number lines and percentage grids can make abstract relationships easier to understand.

For exam preparation, move progressively from:

Concept → Basic calculation → Mixed problems → Word problems → Timed reasoning.

Do not rush directly into difficult questions if the foundations are unstable.

Before exam day, students should be able to explain the relationships rather than simply repeat procedures.

The central idea is:

Fraction ↔ Decimal ↔ Percentage

Once this relationship becomes intuitive, many questions become easier to interpret and solve.

Regular mixed practice then helps students recognise which representation is most useful for each problem.
