3 Ways to Keep Your Cool When an Exam Question Looks Impossible
An impossible-looking question can trigger panic, but the appearance of a question does not determine its actual difficulty.
1. Break it down
Identify what information is provided and what the question is asking you to find. Complex wording often becomes easier once separated into smaller components.
2. Look for clues
Check the diagram, units, answer options, keywords, patterns or relationships. The question may contain more information than you initially notice.
3. Move strategically
If you genuinely cannot progress, do not allow one question to consume the time needed for several easier questions. Move forward when the assessment rules allow and return later.
A useful mental reset is:
Stop → Breathe → Reread → Simplify → Attempt.
Remember that competitive assessments may deliberately include questions that challenge even well-prepared students.
Your goal is not to prove that every question is easy. Your goal is to maximise your overall performance.
After the assessment, review the question without the pressure of the clock. You may discover that the problem was not lack of knowledge but poor time allocation or an ineffective first strategy.
With repeated practice, difficult questions become less emotionally intimidating.
The real skill is developing confidence in your ability to stay analytical when something feels difficult.
